i am using dell 3000 - dual drive -hda(xp),hdd(mepis). i have used local dialup service for several years and now find need for faster service. it is my understanding in verizon info that i will have to click on express in xp to install initial setup install. they offer choice of yahoo or msn services. any opinions on either service from anyone ? then i reboot into mepis and setup should go smooth hopefully. will i be able to use firefox and t-bird without any interference from provider services ? any problems or pitfalls to look out for ? this is new to me since i have been with same dial up service for about 15 years -started with commodore 64 with 300baud modem. thanks for your help. marku.

I made the switch to the $15/mo Verizon DSL service about 2 months ago. I have a dual-boot system and did the setup in windows with verizon's install CD to get a username/password. I also declined the yahoo and msm services by choosing "decide later". When done in windows, I booted into simplymepis and the DSL connection was automatically recognized - I didn't have to do a thing. It was wonderful !
Funny thing is I had contacted verizon's tech support prior to ordering. They were noncommittal regarding linux, saying that it was "unsupported". In fact they seemed a little irritated that someone would not be running windows XP.
Anyway the DSL has been great so far. Very good throughput and no downtime, and it even seems a tad faster in linux than windows. There is a HUGE difference between downloading at 90kB/s vs 5kB/s. You should be very happy.
sounds the same

sounds like i will have the same install as you. amazing that here in the pittsburgh area where there are so many programmers and a history of hackers that few "main stream" computer users have tried macs, linux, or bsd type systems. i guess they are sheep that just follow the crowd. thanks for the info. marku
DSL setup

Welcome to Mepis.
I have SBC Yahoo DSL. I have a modem and a wireless router. I just plugged everything in and logged into the router to set up the MAC address filtering and the essid, and to turn off broadcasting my essid. I changed the admin password for the router. I have 3 PCs, one is a laptop with builtin wireless, one has a PCI wireless card, and one is wired to the router with CAT5 and ethernet connection. I did not turn on encryption. Mepis does not support encryption in the driver it uses for my Netgear PCI card, and I haven't tried another driver or wpa_supplicant.
The Yahoo is just a portal, and you don't need to use it. You may need to log in once to set up your ID and password for DSL. You probably will not need the DSL setup CD.
Verizon is probably very similar. Hope this helps.
