3.4.1-rc2 "Xstart" doesn't work

I just installed the new "probably final" release candidate. It looks very nice when running from CD. However, after doing the HD install and blowing away an ancient version of MEPIS, it doesn't start right. I chose to boot to text, so that I could then give the "startx" command -- I wasn't sure how the nVidia would work out of the box, and generally like to know there's a text mode handy.

Well, the nVidia screen pops up nicely, and then I get a gray crosshatch background with the mouse X-style pointer in the middle of the screen. And a shell window opens in the upper left quadrant. That's it. One shell. No KDE. When I exit the shell, X exits. The same thing happens from root or a user account. (I blew away the old root partition but kept the old /home intact.)

Presumably something isn't set right in the X startup, or I'm giving the wrong command. Any suggestions for getting X and KDE to run? As a workaround, I'd even accept boot-to-X, but don't know how to change the settings outside of X... thanks.

3.4.1-rc2

Try backing up your old home some where else and doing a complete install . There probably not compatible with the new 2.6.12x kernel if its anchient. If it runs good from cd it should work if installed completely.

I've seen many cases when the CD don't get copied right on the HD, try to install again or use another CDs. (at least to cross out this issue) CDs are not really that reliable....

NVIDIA

I did the upgrade install(saved home) of SimplyMEPIS_3.4-2.rc1 on my backup computer, it has nvidia, the install went great. May I suggest you do the same. If it don't work for you, you can always go back to SimplyMEPIS-3.3.1-1 or what ever you used before. Smiling

Try to run the Live CD and then go to "Install Me" and choose to reinstall X config file.

The point is if the CD works the HD install should work too because it uses the same driver.

It's possible the installation didn't work right (most likely CD errors)

I've had to reinstall X

I've had to reinstall X several times. Used the same CD to do so with. With no ill effects. Probably the first thing to do. You can get a text login if you need it without changing the installation.Eye-wink

a current state of mind

It was a clean install

I booted the Live CD and clicked the Install Me icon. It worked on CD. It didn't work on reboot.

I suspect most people take the default (boot to X) and therefore the startup routine is rarely tested. I wonder if I can fix that without reinstalling the whole thing. Not that it's a huge deal, since it installs more easily than most other distros.
