HD Partition

Ok, I just got a new 4GB hard drive for my pet project of a laptop, which came with a 2GB one. I have no clue about partitioning, formatting, or anything else, but the hard drive hasn't been used before. when I try to run the disk partitioner program, it shows the information, but there are no options, except properties. It's showing ~3000MB, but it's a 4GB drive. What can I do next? It's not letting me install.

By the way...

I forgot to give what little specs it's giving me:

Device: /dev/hda
Model: Hitachi_dk226a-32
Capacity: 3091.92 (even though it's a 4GB drive. go figure)
Length Sectors: 6332256
Status: Available

I would like to delete and make a new partition, but none of the toolbar icons are showing, just gray and inactive. There is only one partition on the drive. Help please!

More Information

Every time I try to install it, the box comes up with the big long error message, ending with:
'If you created or changed a DOS partition, /dev/foo7, say, then use dd(1) to zero the first 512 bytes: dd if+/dev/zero/zero of=/dev/foo7 bs=512 count=1 (See fdisk(Cool.)
Error: Unable to open /dev/hda - unrecognised disk label
Segmentation fault'

Then it just brings me back to the root@0[root]*: command line, because I am installing it in failsafe, to save time. I'm so confused. How do I freakin fdisk it in linux?!?

Dang it

All this time the hard drive was making a clicking noise, and it turns of it's a faulty. One of the arm's not moving (mabye that's why there's only 3000MB showing). Thanks anyway guys
