Please Post Site Suggestions Here

Due to the recent announcement of the server changes I have added an area to the forums for people to post site suggestions and requests for added site functionality. I know that many of you have already posted what you would like to have added to the site, such as support for subscriptions, but it will work out much better if everyone will post their suggestions and requests one more time to this forum which is set aside specifically for those types of requests and suggestion. This will help us by having all of the requests and suggestions in one place.
We will look over all input and take each request and suggestion under serious consideration. Let me be the first to say thank you to all of the Mepis family for your input and thank you for all of your help with Mepis development. I also want to thank Warren and the core Mepis team for upgrading the server. This will be a great benefit for the users of Mepis and this site.

The suggestions I have, are of various nature, that may not be 100% site suggestions, but here goes:
1. Information on compatibility issues in debian pools and remedial action
Sometimes an upgrade from the debian pools may lead to problems with nvidia drivers, hwdata problems and the likes. The site might put up a big fat warning if such issues occur. Moreover, it would be cool if the Live CD offered the possibility to get a repair packge from the Mepis site (say a previous version of HWdata) and install it back on the hard drive to make the Mepis install work again.
2. Hardware compatibility guide.
I know this already exists on Mepislovers, but...
The Mepis Control Centre could offer a script to run a kudzu -p (or sth like it), send the output to a file, and the upload it to the site via a PHP script. That script should then parse the file and load the info into a database. The user could then add comments for all found hardware (especially if it requires special action, works out of the box etc).

Mailing list for 'hot' issues
Posts: 2299
It might be a good idea if people could subscribe to a mailng list via the website, so as to receive important notifications, like the warning Warren posted about not upgrading from etch. Other announcements could be done via such a list as well (via opt-in system), such as availability of new RC, update in Mepis pools etc.

Thanks

Also drlizau and joeintenn -- if you are the ones to fix this, can we have your e-mail addys -- an e-mail might work well for some questions rather than a post

List of Repositories

How about a complete list of the up to date current repositories, with a list for the special software ie:wine, audio, patches, you get the idea. It would beat the heck out of changing the lists everytime a new version comes out. But then hey I am getting lazy in my old age.
emoticons

Fix emoticons
because currently every emoticon automatically adds line break, and that's not always what the person writing post wants.
Or maybe install a real forum like PHPBB, then you wouldn't have to fix or add anything

How about a Goto Top button on every page??

I have to agree on the apt

I have to agree on the apt repository suggestion. It's one of the most important things to have right on your system, and it can be a pain in backside, especially for new folks. I figure that making sure people know where to link for Etch security updates is even more important.

Menu and link broken
Posts: 220
The menu on the left of the mepis.org page used to have a very valuable link " http://www.mepis.org/tracker " which led to the latest posts in ALL categories. Now that link is missing, and using a bookmark or typing produces a " page not found ".
Please bring it back !

I agree! The Recent Posts {mepis.org/tracker} was very valuable.
Newbies don't always post in the most appropriate forum for their problem, and many posts wouldn't be seen by folks who can help if they had to go through the fora one by one to find the recent posts.

Please, please, please restore the 'Recent Posts' feature.
You have eliminated a highly valuable tool and resource for the purpose of navigating this forum.
I am absolutely stunned by its removal and disappointed at the lack of foresite involved in this decision.

mepis.org/tracker is back!

Just noticed that mepis.org/tracker again works to display the " recent posts ' .. not back into the menu (yet ?) but a bookmarked url DOES work !
WooHoo !

because planned changes to the server config get emailed to me in advance.
There was planned some beautification of the site - and I think that the essential tracker went AWOL.

I suggest that this whole site be converted to a forum form just like the one they have at:
http://blenderartists.org/forum/
Everything from announcements and news to tutorials for beginners should be in this forum. I've seen these same type of sites and they seem pretty standard. I figured some site developers must be maintaining them. I looked at the bottom of the page and I found this:
Powered by vBulletin Version 3.5.3
Copyright ??2000 - 2006, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
I don't know how much these forum owners pay, but the end product seems very efficient. Point of my suggestion is, why bother figuring out what to do with this site? Why not just do what everyone else does at the moment?

Would Greatly appreciate a search tool for Forums
How about stickies?
1. Many forums have a few stickies that assist with the simple queries that are asked most frequently by noobies.
2. Topic headings - for example the forums page having a small number of subjects or topic titles into which relevant topics are posted.
3. Subscribers get early access, but by how much? 1 week, 1 month? Apart from supporting a fantastic distro and the people working hard to make it so, what's the difference? I did a trial sub and found the public mirrors had the same versions.
4. changelogs - variances between the releases E.G. Simply Mepis/MepisLite/SOHO Server etc., or a list of changes since the last releases.
