first of all i am a newby when it comes to linux.

i searched the whole net for answers but couldn't find anything.

here is the problem:

I know it may be something with the XF86Config-4 file, but just don't know what to change in the concerning file????

I use a Maxdata intel P4, 512MB RAM, and a Gericom vga monitor. on board grafic card.

so please tell me what I have to change and where.

MEPIS INSTALL

First off did you check the md5, second did you burn your cd at a slow speed of say 4X's, if not gave it a try and let us know.

sorry but I have no clue what u mean with md5. and I think the CD is OK, because I previously installed it on a different computer and it worked just fine. i think its because mepis doesn't know what Grafic card i have. but thats just a quess of course.

and thanks for the quick reply. i will try and burn the cd again with a slower speed.

md5 check

Whenever I download an ISO file, I always look for an md5sum file and also download it. Then I execute the command:
md5sum -c
I look for an "OK" return. I then burn the ISO to a cd with the K3b "verify" option.

In order to run the md5sum command, I first open a terminal window and change directory (cd) to where the files are. Example is:
cd /home/warren/downloads
md5sum -c SimplyMEPIS_3.4-3.rc1.md5sum

ok thank you. now i know

ok thank you.
now i know about the md5 sum, but that still doesn't solve my problem, because I'm pretty sure that it's got something to do with my G.card!

I am not sure but in my

I am not sure but in my notes l have a command that l never tried myself but here goes : xdrvr=vesa
I don't know what will happen when this command is typed but what the heck ... nothing to lose.

@Wayne: thanks for the hint

@Wayne:

thanks for the hint but I got it worked out.
As I expected, it had to do something with the XF86Config-4 File. I changed the name of the G.card to "vesa"(on board grafic) and it worked.
i found that out by booting from the Knoppix DVD and looking into that Config file! Nice workaround I guess Eye-wink
