SimplyMEPIS 3.4-3rc1 - Is it Soup Yet?

warren's picture

Morgantown, WV, January 14, 2006: The latest SimplyMEPIS release candidate, version 3.4-3 rc1 is expected to fix the recent problems with parallel printer compatibility. Look for it in the testing subdirectory at the MEPIS Subscriber's Site and public mirrors. For up to 7 days, please send feedback to dev@mepis.org

For 3.4-3, SimplyMEPIS utilizes a 2.6.15 kernel and udev for most hardware autodetection and configuration tasks. Network setup was changed to take advantage of udev event handling. After the final release, the changes in 3.4-3 will be be available in updated MEPIS packages.

The kernel was made more modular so it would be easier to issue updates to drivers, particularly for Intel. Since KDE 3.4.3 became available in the past few weeks, it was also included. Firefox 1.5 was updated to a more stable build.

Warren says, "Debian developers have been working very hard to keep up with the rapid changes in Linux technology. This is a good thing. Our challenge is to keep up with Linux and Debian."

"Debian Unstable is truly unstable and will probably stay that way. Users who want their systems to work reliably should steer clear of unstable. If members of the MEPIS community want to install packages from unstable, they are welcome to do so, as long as they realize that by doing so they have become bleeding-edge testers of software that is not yet ready for everyday use. Debian Etch is also changing quickly but at least it is stable most of the time."

Warren continues "We've made adjustments to our development process, so MEPIS releases will be easier to manage in the future. And we think we have found a sweet spot where the core of SimplyMEPIS is synced to Debian Etch and where it is tweaked to just work."

SimplyMEPIS is available as a free download from public Linux mirrors. MEPIS subscribers also have access, sometimes early access, to MEPIS ISOs at the MEPIS subscribers ftp site.
