Mepis 3.4-3rc1

I just installed 3.4-3rc1 on dual boot(xp) with no problems. This is the first time everything has worked for me out of the box since 2004-06.

My setup is:

MB: ABIT AV-10 (Built in audio, ethernet and video)
CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2400+
Printer: HP OfficeJet K80 thru JetDirect adapter (170X)

Thought you might want the feedback ---

This is the best distro for me I have installed (I've installed most live ones). You are definitely on the right track.

Thank You, You are going places with this one!

Bill

I also like this one, I like

I also like this one, I like the new bootsplash with progress bar too.

The only issue that I noticed for now is that the authentication key for Debian Etch is missing, that's not a big deal but newbies might get confused about "strange" error messages.

I also agree, it is great!

I also agree, it is great! I LOVE the new bootsplash! Also, I haven't put a watch to it yet, but it seems like it's booting quite a bit faster to me.
This looks like a great release for Mepis, hope so anyway.

Hmmm

You guy's most be having better luck than me, I've got a few things that went wrong. I was setting the time and checked the box for ntp time and the system froze(ntpdate is not installed) also i've had that kcm shell error when kde is starting(i ran fschk and i didn't see the error on this boot so i hope thats fixed). I also like the new look with the boot/shutdown splash screens(except the orange color(i changed mine to floresnt green) for the progresse bar).

File System Problem

Kerry, I think you had better luck than me...
So I start the install and it fails saying it failed to write the file system, so I start Qtparted and the install has changed my ext3 file system to ext2 and made the partition active? So I delete the partitions and rebuild the partitions ext3 and start the install now the installer says hda7 is hda8 and hda8 is hda7? So I boot the SM 3.3.1 cd and rebuild the file system again and SM 3.3.1 reads the drives ok, I boot the 3.4-3rc1 and start the install, same thing all over again? I booted Xandros and rebuilt the file system and it installed with no problem. So I tried 3.4-3rc1 again and I had the same problem as before it failed and made my ext3 into ext2 and the partition active again!!! I already know you don't need an active partition with linux. Any body have a clue? What is wrong? After 4 hours trying to install this new rc I'm not going to try any more untill I have a clue as to what the problem is. Sad

Anyone who posts a comment

Anyone who posts a comment here like "Mepis doesn't work" without checking the md5sum of the CD deserve some spanking.

Either check the box in K3B to verify the CD after burn, or use:
md5sum /dev/cdrom or md5sum /dev/hdc (depending on the name of CDROM on your system) and than compare the result with the md5sum on FTP site.

Re; File System Problem - Bad Dog

Bad Dog,
I had a bit of a prob partitioning and installing to begin with as well.
Had 3 partitions, 10g root[hda1], 1g swap[hda2], 17g home[hda3].
2 things caused trouble;
* 1st was trying to install with a USB hub plugged in - removed hub & rebooted off MEPIS cd
* 2nd I had to "clear" or freespace the root partition [hda1], reboot then partition the freespace as Ext3, reboot and then I installed into root & root/home:hda1, swap:hda2, did not use old home:hda3.
I think my problem stemmed from original hda1 formating was Ext2 converted to Ext3 and had crashed a few times when using Ext2.
I don't know about the USB hub hang-up though. Still looking in to this.
I don't know if any of this will help you or not. The reformatting of hda1 caught me out at first.

3.4-3rc1 is looking fast 'n' feeling very smooth.
Thanks guys.

Adrian, you may have found my problem, I did verify the md5 with K3B as I always do but I have never used the Konsole to verify and the Konsole said my md5 was wrong...I'm doing a new burn on another computer and doing a fresh DL on another and I will try again. I hope this works.

Me to

Hey bad dog, my first attempt at installing failed to, it didn't install all the way till i formatted it a second time.

Also nix hard, i had problems with the a usb too, i have a 128mb memory stick that i use to save the important stuff so i can do a clean install. I had to manually do the fstab and create the /mnt folder to get it to work. Check your /media folder it should have all usb->
file:///media/usb
file:///media/usb0
file:///media/usb1
file:///media/usb2
file:///media/usb3
file:///media/usb4
file:///media/usb5
file:///media/usb6
file:///media/usb7

Then make a folder for the item you plug in to the usb in /mnt ->
file:///mnt/hda1
file:///mnt/hda2
file:///mnt/hda4
file:///mnt/hdb1
file:///mnt/hdb2
file:///mnt/sda
file:///mnt/temp
file:///mnt/temp2
file:///mnt/ipod

I hope you have luck getting that fixed. take care

k3b

Forgive the newbie here -- anybody else have a problem using K3B to burn an ISO image with 3.4.3 rc1?? It goes on for twenty minutes with no progress bar movement and apparently freezes the program (not the entire pc tho'). I don't want to report a problem 'cause i am way too new at this!

New DL and a new burn a freash cd, K3B and the Konsole said the md5 was ok, I checked the file system on the computer and it was ok, I started the install and it failed with the same problem again. Before I build another computer to test this rc on I will wait for some more reports.

Warning - no option to install grub in root again???

After waiting and watching the site twice a day since Christmas to see if the next version was posted, and 12 hours to download it, I gleefully set about installing Mepis, only to find that just like 3.4.2rc1, it did not offer the option to install grub to the root partition. Last time, I elected not to install it, but because I read the option to install grub to the root partition was going to be incorporated into the next release, I run the installer and having overwritten my last install, I was committed to finish it, and overwrite my treasured multiboot MBR.

The bad news was that it took me nearly 90 minutes to get my original MBR back again, but the redeeming news was the live CD gave me the option to re-install grub into the root partition only AFTER it had alread trashed my original MBR.

Don't get me wrong, I'm delighted to have an updated Mepis distro, but the hassle with not having the option to select the location for grub during the initial install process after the 12 hour download was a real tragedy and I sincerely warn people to treat this issue with extreme caution.

Lucky I had a backup of all of my important files, shame it took me half a day to do a 15 minute job!!

It took me two tries to get it installed...

Something is different with the way it's writing to GRUB...

It appeared to install OK, and write to GRUB OK the first time I tried (and I was using partitions that were already there, and already had GRUB installed with dual boot to begin with).

But, even though it asked "OK to install GRUB for Windows and Mepis", only Mepis ended up in the boot menu.

Rather than just reinstall GRUB, I did a full install of 3.4.3 RC1 again. The second time around, it worked (included Windows in the boot choices).

My theory.... I copied some drivers from my NTFS paritition to see if NDISWRAPPER was going to work OK. So, the mounted drive may have messed it for the rest of the install (I don't think it should have, since I usually install this way, but stranger things have happened).

The second install attempt worked (and I didn't copy files from my NTFS parition during the second install to see if that was the culprit).

So Far So Good

Install seem to go ok
Freaked me out with those large huge FATAL errors at init
something about thermal driver....etc....for apmi
but since it couldn't find the drivers and the error routines
where written very well....it just went on installing...hurray!!!

I am going to stomp around in this new treehouse intensely
and report back any anonmolies...but so far so good.

tnx Warren

kernel-headers !

hello
Where can I found the kernel-headers-2.6.15-1-586tsc ?
Because I can't compile driver of my eagle-usb dsl modem !
With the kernel 2.6.15 of kernel.org, I can't compile this driver, "the kernel headers is not the same".
Thank you !

Mepis 3.4-3rc1

Downloaded twice and burned the ISO twice. First time failed, a bad download Barf!. Second time worked like a charm Smiling. Kudo's to the Mepis development team for another great release candidate distro. My hat is off to all of you. Thankyou Warren. . . I love mepis.

The progress bar intro screen is a nice addition Smiling

I downloaded about 400 files from the Debian repositories (3 of them in Synaptic) everything worked and installed smoothly Smiling

Is there a subject area where one can ask or suggest idea's for future packages's, additions, artwork? Just wondering.

Richard

kerry's picture

Yeah

I think this mepis version is going to be great on the next release. For now i think this one is still a little "buggy" . I've installed it on 2 of my machines, both had different problems, i think most of it stem's from the mepis os center, it's not installing somethings right. Most of the things have been easy for me to fix on my 2 computer's but it just took time to locate the problems. Other than that i'm just changing thing's to my preferences(like the orange progresse bar, i changed mine to green) You change that here >/etc/splashy/config.xml< just right click and open with a editor(i use kwrite) heres what i changed mine to->
red>0
green>255
blue>0
alpha>255

To find what color you want just right click the clock >configure clock>foreground color, after your done getting the #'s for your color just cancel the color thing out.

All other changes i made are standard, so no instructions needed.lol

So Far So Good

Well I certainly don't like the difference between udev and hotplug
so far as grandma using it....

I loved the way you could just say create new device and under
the device window fstab would show up with all the choices
and you would find /mnt/sda1...etc...
now you gotta ether tail....or just know enough to find the /dev/sda1
etc..and blindly put it into the window when it asks for device...
but it still works...

My HP 1100 laserjet works perfectly as a tcp networked printer going
thru a directjet...which is why i went back to 3.3.1-1 instead
of staying put with all the previous rc releases...my canon selpy510
photo printer works flawlessly thru local usb printer....

and that's about it for now...
modem's are next let ya'll know ...tnx
