Slow hardware pcmcia modem - 3cxm756

Got a 3Com 3cxm756 pcmcia modem (hardware control) off eBay a few months back - because they work very well (or the 3cxm556) with Linux. Worked like a charm with my old RedHat installs.

Well - works with MEPIS but the connect speed is *always* 9600. Absolutely cannot figure out why or how to increase that to 48600 or higher which this modem is certainly capable of!

Any suggestsions? Thanks!

(Isn't it amazing how 9600 seems slow now? Remember when 14.4K was the ultimate?)

UPDATE - problem solved after perusing the archives. Real simple - set the "speed" under modem configuration to 57600. *Poof*.
