starting SNMP

I'm trying to get cacti configured and running on this. Cacti will show you graphs of what your computer is doing, and to get some more info like traffic counters, snmp needs to be running.
Tried starting it through inetd and then xinetd didn't get it started.
anyone know how to get this running?
(next job is to get the info off the Karlnet bridge that talks to the internet).
