SimplyMEPIS 3.4-3rc2 - Getting Closer

Morgantown, WV, January 17, 2006: The latest SimplyMEPIS release candidate, version 3.4-3 rc2 addresses some problems identified and reported by the community. Look for it in the testing subdirectory at the MEPIS Subscriber's Site and public mirrors. For up to 7 days, please send feedback to dev@mepis.org
All users were added to the scanner group, this is a change mandated by the Debian udev configuration. Usbmount was removed because all of it's functionality seems to be handled elsewhere in udev. As far as we can tell, it's never called.
Meauto was tweaked to enable serial ports, if serial is not configured automatically by the system. This should work only for standard serial ports and internal modems that have a UART interface.
The OSCenter installer was modified to place a time delay in front of calls to mkfs.ext2. This is required because under certain conditions udev rebuilds the dev entries for hard drives and mkfs.ext2 tests too soon for the dev entry. This is not a problem with mkfs.reiserfs. This fixes a problem where SimplyMEPIS could not be installed on some ext2/3 hard drive partitions.
The fglrx driver for ATI was updated to the latest version patched by Norbert Tretkowski to fix a conflict between the driver and the 2.6.15 kernel. The conflict caused a hang when logging out. Thanks Norbert!
The splashy config was tweaked to present a more aesthetic progress bar.
