Mepis won't recognize Belkin NIC

Recently installed Mepis from the "Point & Click Linux" (Miller) disc on my Compaq M700. Everything goes except my Belkin wireless-G network card. I can't get Mepis to recognize it.

The card is backwards compatible with 802.11b, and works fine under Windows 98SE on the same laptop (using the wi-fi at my local library). I read somewhere that Belkin uses the Atheros chipset which I was under the impression is compatible with Linux.

Any suggestions as to whether or not this card will work with Mepis and, if so, what I need to do? Or will I have to get another card to use on Mepis in addition to the one I already have that I can use on Windows?

Wireless card

Welcome to Mepis!

The version of Mepis in that book is quite old -- you may want to download a newer version.

Need more details of your card

What is exact model number and chipset?

Is it an F5D6020? Which version? Is it PCMCIA?

The card could have

The card could have different chipsets, the lspci command should indicate which chipset it has. A number of Belkin wireless cards are known to work with linux but may require an updated driver for your kernel, which may require compiling it using the kernel sources. Some may also work with a windows driver with ndiswrapper, but it may provide less security functionality. I have a recent Netgear cardbus Mimo SuperG Atheros-based card working very well with a recent madwifi driver in Mepis 3.3.1-1, but it wasn't supported by the driver version included in that version of Mepis.

A few Belkin wireless cards known to work in Linux with native drivers (incomplete list):
