Just installed SM3.4-3.rc3

The CD-DVD seems to work like a USB key now, the icons only appear when there is a disk in the drive, I was lightly concerned what this might imply for DVD movies (DVD already mounted?) but there was no problem there.
Konqueror as a web browser seems to be pretty fragile, falls over very easily, especially when opening a child window, but that seems to have been the case for a while now.
The main issue seems to be the ever decreasing set of installable applications, or at least they can be installed if you don't mind losing K3B etc.
And for those people who tell us that KPackage will NEVER remove files without giving you a yes/no option
I wished to install Qcad but was told that this could not be installed without libqt3c102-mt, I searched for and selected this file and selected install (without checking the test button, what can I say) and KPackage then without any queries installed the package, deleting a truck load of others in the process. I have been using Mepis and Debian for a few years now so was surprised. Anyway it took me to a position where I had to reboot. Just the first part of the boot process took place (without the neat blue background and % markers) and then it gave up and left me with a black screen and flashing cursor.
Just as a check I reinstalled and tried it again (hey it only takes 15 minutes) Exactly the same no warnings just delete the system.
Finally I reinstalled and did the same with the test button checked and this is the resulting list.
I'm still pissed about not having qcad though.

I wasn't making the point against Mepis, it's just that it was the first thing that had come up after a new install. I was really commenting about the state of the repositories and waving too the people who say that KPackage will NEVER do bad things to you.

If you read the prompts and you say "No" when it tries to remove important packages than it will never do bad things. If you respond blindly "yes" to any prompt than I'm afraid there's no hope.

The rant wasn't aimed at you....
And everyone knows about the warnings prior to removing the boatload...
It just shouldn't have ever come to this....with etch..
and I shouldn't have to watch for rattlesnakes to newbie upgrade...
Also I stand by my original point....
Load up a fresh 3.3.1-1 then try to install Amarok or grip
and watch the whistles and bells go off warning you about losing
all of your gui desktop just to add those two common apps...
hehehe..

I know... But, 3.3.1-1 is

I know...
But, 3.3.1-1 is kind of old, Etch is moving forward, if you install 3.4-3 you'll not have that problem.
Or if you want perfect stability you could use Sarge (stable) that doesn't change. However the perfect combination in my opinion is latest Mepis + Etch.

3.3.1-1 had no problems...except MC is missing on initial install
as far as I'm concerned....
Are you keeping count of how many this don't work and that don't work
have been posted today alone....it's in the hundreds....
cmon......

You can't expect Etch to
Posts: 4077
You can't expect Etch to stay in place for half of year for you to use an old product. That 3.3.1 is more closer to Sarge, you might have success installing programs from there, otherwise you could get the Mepis Extra CDs that are a snaptshot at the time 3.3 was released (I think)

"Hey keep that crap over in testing and leave us Etch folks alone"!!!"
The only problem is that Etch = testing, the idiots will yell back at you: "Keep your hand off our testing then!!!"

Burdicda is right! This is a major problem for newbies like myself. It's hard enough learning a new OS without having it replaced every few months by a supposedly more up to date and better version.
It is very frustrating to spend weeks, or even months, tracking down how to tweak your distribution and overcome its minor faults only to find the latest upgrades don't work with your distribution, or create a whole new range of problems.

Than why don't you just get Mepis Extra CDs and just install programs from there?

If you read the prompts and you say "No"
My point was that there where NO prompts, I tried it twice as a check and watched very closely, NO PROMPTS !!
The Irony of the Debian Repositories...
I really don't know what anyone on the Mepis side of things can do about it, but for quite sometime now I have felt like a hostage to the debian repositories....
I cannot install a fresh 3.3.1-1 and then go right in and install
Amarok
Grip
K3b upgrade
and quite a few other really wonderful to have packages
without being "driveby gangbanged"
There are no protections in place to keep you from losing kdm
kde...and all the major gui packages...
Sometimes I just wanna yell at those idiots and say
"Hey keep that crap over in testing and leave us Etch folks alone"!!!
I could care less about having cutting edge apps that are only a few minutes old....
The problem is these folks working on k3b and other apps are locking us out ...with wild bleeding edge library lockins...
Linux....Mepis and all other distributions need a "k3b"
we need an "Amarok"....we need a "Grip" and I would settle for older
versions if I could but that doesn't seem to be an option...
