The fix I found that's working here was to upgrade "hal" to 0.5.5.1-5 [unstable/sid]
You need to have at least "udev" 0.081-1 [testing/etch as well]
All auto-mounting working well now. Including USB floppy.

This I did after upgrading rc3 to KDE 3.5 which broke auto-mount.

3.4-3rc3 and KDE 3.5 ...
... my kind of O/S Heaven

R50 IBM laptop now "cold" boots in under 2 minutes.
Auto-mounts everything.
Never done this before.
