SimplyMEPIS 3.4-3rc4 - Enough
Morgantown, WV, January 31, 2006: SimplyMEPIS release candidate, version 3.4-3 rc4 adds some last minute fixes. We plan for this to be FINAL. Further changes will be handled with in-line updates that will be available to everyone via the MEPIS pool. Look for rc4 in the testing subdirectory at the MEPIS Subscriber's Site and public mirrors. A typo was fixed that might help with non-root access to printers. There was a major update of foomatic that should help with other lingering printer problems. Frozen-bubble had to be removed to make room for the new foomatic--it almost doubled in size.
Meauto and the oscenter were modified to explicitly set the WEP key mode. This fixed some problems using WEP encryption with wireless.
Udev was updated and this fixed most of the problems with floppy detection. But floppy unmount still does not work correctly due to a bug in the Debian release of KDE 3.4.3.
Kplayer's file associations in KDE were minimized so kplayer would not interfere with the other multimedia plugins. This is caused by a bug in kplayer that is suppose to be fixed in the next major release of kplayer.
usb-storage is now built-in the kernel and a delay has been added before mounting partitions in the initrd. This should reduce or eliminate issues of USB drives not being recognized when udev is started. This problem is caused by a race condition between the USB subsystem and udev.
Meauto was modified to assume that when a partition is labeled as vfat, it might really contain reiserfs. This should reduce problems where partitions can't be mounted because the partition table and the first sector of the partition disagree about the format of the partition. This problem is caused by partition tools that do not maintain the consistency of the format metadata.
