Printer installation to Mepis

I'm new to Linux and Mepis. The printer installation wizard has a problem. I need help to install my HP psc 1210 Printer into Mepis. Can someone help me step by step. I don't know how to install or unistall stuff on Mepis. I need help with proper commands to use, etc.

Thanks

same problem with Printer

I just installed Mepis 3.4.3 on a clean 40GB Maxtor HD and installation went smooth except I can't get Mepis to see my Network Printer, a HP Deskjet 3620 that's hooked up to another pc running Ubunto. The wizard doesn't have my printer model (neither did Ubunto but it accepted the HP3650 which I tried but didn't work) and I tried other hp models but nothing worked. I've tried all the possible printer setups in the Backend Selection but nothing works.

Thanks for any advise/help........

See if there are any clues here.

Printer problems

Thanks for the link. I think my real problem is trying to install a printer that is not hooked up to this machine but rather to another pc that has the printer. I need to configure how to access the printer (through networking|sharing) that's on the host pc running Ubunto. I guess I have to find the right forum. Hope you can point me in the right direction. Meanwhile I'll dig into Mephis guides.
Thanks Puzzled

Go out to the repositories and download/upgrade CUPS and don't forget the footmatic stuff, especially the footmatic-filters-ppds file.
Then go to the settings->print manager menu option, add a printer and continue on.

HP Model 825C Printer (HP 6506A)

I have Simply Mepis 6.0 on my Compaq V2000 laptop with a USB cable to my HP 825C printer. It seems to want to print color but not black. I prepared a test page in Open Office and it printed the text in red. I have the HP printer software disc, but it doesn't seem to have any effect including printer tools for aligning printer etc. Any assistance would be much appreciated.

local and network printer install using CUPS

To configure a printer in mepis 6.0.
Kmenu=>Print system => add printer This opens a wizard.
Do what the menu asks. You will need to know where the printer is attached (parallel port or usb etc).
The make and model of your printer. If the printer is attached to the machine you are on, it is a local printer.

Some printers don't work . Talk to the manufacture. As noted above linuxprinting.org can help a lot for the problem printers. Sad

Note that there are manufacturier listings for both HEWLETT-PACKARD and HP.Puzzled
PSC 1210 is under HP. The 1210 hpijs model listing uses the hp drivers. Either that selection or the plain psc1210 should work.

On the machine that the printer is attached to, if you are USING CUPS. To allow other machines to use the printer you will need to configure the /etc/cups/cupsys.conf file to allow browsing from other machines on the same network. uncomment the BrowseAddress @LOCAL line (delete #) sample below.

#BrowseProtocols cups
.
.
.
#BrowseAddress x.y.z.255
#BrowseAddress x.y.255.255
#BrowseAddress x.255.255.255
#BrowseAddress 255.255.255.255
BrowseAddress @LOCAL
#BrowseAddress @IF(name)

Mepis 6.0 already has this done.

You can also do this on the machine with the printer connected by editing the file directly or using the cups web administration program. Use browser, go to http://localhost:631/ Go to the adminstration section and edit config section. You will need to restart the cups server or reboot for the changes to take effect.

Mepis 6.0 will automatically detect the remote printers. I suspect earlier version of Mepis will also.

NOTE that the printer will need to be configured only on the machine to which it is attached.

HP 825C Printer response clarification request:

Your Note: that the printer will need to be configured ONLY on the machine to which it is attached...begs a question. My machine is a Compaq V2000 laptop with a partioned hardrive dual bootable with Windows XP and Mepis 6.0. Does the fact that it is partioned with dual operating systems (dual boot) mean that if it is configured to print with Windows XP that it can not also be configured to print when in Linux Mepis??? Thank you Rich for your prompt response to my problem.

dual boot machines

When dual booting.

Yes the printer can be used by both operating systems.
Think of the seperate operating systems as different machines.

Note: different linux distributions would be treated as different operating system in this context.

The printer will need to be configured seperatly in Mepis and in windows and every other operating system you might have on the same machine.

Sharing printers between comuters running windows and linux in the same network is a different ball game. You can use SAMBA on linux to share printers with windows computers. I don't know of a way to share a network printer running on a windows computer with linux computers. There probably is but I don't windows.

Have fun.Smiling
Actually setting up printers in linux is fairly simple IF (BIG IF) the printer is supported. Mepis 6.0 makes it easy to share printers since it is already configured to scan for network printers.

Good luck Edge and let me know how it goes.

Just a thought. You often do not have to have the exact printer driver in order to work. Try some others. I have a HP 4315 printer, no driver in Mepis, but works ok with HP 3925 (I think), anyway one that was the closest number I could find. Good luck.

Notes on the PSC1210

Since your printer is an all-in-one unit, you will need to have HPLIP installed. Mepis 6.0 has HPLIP already installed and configured.

When you configure your PSC1210 using the KDE utility, you will need to select the URI containing

hp:/usb/psc_1200_series?serial=

followed by the serial number of your device. This allows your PSC1210 to use the HP backend. Not only will you be able to print to the device, you can scan from the device at the same time.
