GeForce 6600 GT - use dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

I have an older version of SimplyMEPIS working fine w/ this card. On a 2nd PC with the same video card, SimplyMEPIS 3.4-3 (final)'s installation of the nVidia driver didn't work. I even copied my older xorg.conf to the new PC and manually compared line by line, commenting out the propper modules, etc. I spent two days tweaking and testing.
Finally, everything worked immediately when I ran this command:
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
