USB Key drives

I just tried accessing 2 Kingston USB key drives in Mepis 3.4-3.
While it recognizes that they are there, they will not mount.
My Sandisk Key drive works flawlessly. Does anyone have any idea what Kingston does different? Yes I re-formated them as fat32.

Kingston

I know for a fact that if you use rc3 you will not have the problem. If you look at the icon on the desktop for the flash drive you will see that SM 3.4 say's the flash drive is in TB's. Also if you press F2 at start up you will see the buffer errors for the flash drive. You will not have those errors with rc3, but if you do the rc3 install, you will need to update udev. If you need help post back here after the install.

Hi, Pardon my ignorance but what does rc stand for?
I can't get on the download site to get the latest release. Not sure what is going on as I still have several months left on my subscription.

"release candidate" It means

"release candidate" It means it is not a final release. In this case I fell it will work better for you.
Give this a try.

release candidate

Ok that makes total sense. So is RC4 an upgrade/later version of rc3 or just a slightly different version that a comparision is being done on?
Thanks for your help.

So is RC4 an upgrade

Yep, rc1-2-3-4 that's the way it goes. If you install rc3 you will need to upgrade "udev" and you will be good to go. I had a problem with rc4(I don't remeber what it was) and the final came out shortly after and you can see the problem with the final, so I just went back to rc3 and did the udev upgrade and I was good to go. Even though it takes a little time to download, burn and install a linux distro, I do it all the time with little thought. If it rubs me the wrong way, I just install another distro on top of it, but MEPIS is my main squeeze and I spent a lot of time trying to make it(3.4) work for me, in the end, it is no longer installed on any of my computers and I'm back using SM 3.3.2-3 with my repos set for Sarge. If you run Debian testing and unstable for awhile you will see a big difference when you go back to stable. In a few months systems using udev(the main feature in 3.4) will be the norm and it will be alot more stable than it is today. I really do think you should at least give rc3 a try after all it is the newest and the greatest. Smiling

RC4

I tried both RC3 and rc4 and both solved the problem. I couldn't get rc4 to upgrade so I just installed over everything. As you can gather I'm most definitely a Linux newbie but I am loving it. My biggest problem is unlearning 15 years of DOS and Windows. I should have switched when Win95 cam out but I was still pissed at IBM for dropping the ball with OS/2.
The fact that I can have Mepis up and running in under 20 minutes switched me over big time. The large group of friends I used to do HOURS of stupid tech support for because of Windows has dropped hugely as I started switching them over to Mepis. Most don't even want me to upgrade them from 3.3.2. " It ain"t broke! so don't fix it! Windoze never worked this good!" Not bad for an OS that only geeks and nerds could possibly use. I think this speaks volumes for Warren's commitment to this OS.
Next newbie question: What's Sarge?
So much to learn,,, So many Windows users to save!

Sarge is the name for Debian Stable, as etch/testing, as sid/unstable, last year Stable was named Woody and when etch is ready it will be moved to stable and sid will be moved to testing. At some point Debian will put a freeze on etch, all the bug's will be found and fixed and then it will be moved to stable. If you go to the Debian web page you can get an idea of all the work that goes into a Debian system.

Just Ask...

Welcome to the machine Pardu....

Quite a few folks here have the same background

Beta tester OS/2....Windows....Mepis....

Throw out the anchor.....here is good enough...

My Kingston USB Key Works Ok

I have a Kingston DataTraveler 512MB USB key drive that works fine with MEPIS 3.4-3. All I did was put it into the slot of my BenQ S52 Joybook, waited a few seconds and voila! ... the Kingston icon appeared on the desktop. Was able to access all of the files in it. And I didn't even reformat it; used it straight out of the box.

I'm glad 3.4 has this figured out. Hated MEPIS for not having this built-in in 3.3 (I'm a n00b, hehe).

This problem has been solved by using SimplyMEPIS 6.0. Smiling
