SimplyMepis 3.3.2, PPPoE, and DSL modem

Mepis is not recognizing my dsl modem in any of the kernels.

I run "pppoe config" and get a reply "... the Access Concentrator did not get a response from my provider" type of message.

What is this message telling me?
How can I fix it so my dsl modem is automatically recognized.

Bear in mind that I am a newbie to Linux and would like instructions in newbie language. Thanks.

The modem brand is Paradyne, not sure of the model, and it is ethernet.

DSL Modem problem

Without more info it's hard to help you. But, I have Verizon DSL and it works perfectly. To use it, you first install it via Windows [I used X/P Pro] and it will grab all the stuff it needs via MS browser & mailer. Then when u boot into Mepis it will be all set for your Mepis browser..I use Mozilla. The Mozilla mail set-up uses incoming.verizon.net and outgoing.verizon.net. They dont tell u that.

Do not use ADSL/PPPOE from Mepis..not needed.

PS: The modem is an ActionTecGT704WG [wireless + Router.

To us newbies, the obvious sometimes isn't obvious!

3.3.2, PPPoE, DSL Modem

My Paradyne modem model is 6381-A3-200. I have no problems with this modem and WinXP using the Kmeleon browser, or any other browser. I've contacted my ISP to determine if the modem is Linux compatible.

My NIC is a RealTek8139.

I'll try your suggestion and post outcome. Thanks for your guidance.

3.3.2, PPPoE, DSL Modem

Ok, Ok, I give! I guess I'm not ready for Linux. I searched forums to solve my modem problem and what I found gave me a headache (literally)! This newbie found the info too difficult to understand...download this, unpack that, install, find whatever. When I had dialup, Linux worked great. Its ironic that my DSL modem works extremely well with WinXP but flunks with Linux (several distros-not just Mepis). The problem may be with my modem, or with Linux, or the NIC, or something else-I've had enough. For the multitudes that enjoy and work with Linux, I hope to join you someday, but that day is not today.

Thanks for all the help.

Well, I have one more thing

Well, I have one more thing for you to try. Start MEPIS OS Center and in the section network, tab eth0, tic the boxes start at boot, internet/wan port, use dhcp for ip, apply and close. Restart your computer and see if you can use the internet. Good Luck.

SimplyMepis 3.3.2, PPPoE, and DSL Modem-Success!!

I am truly elated in that I finally got my DSL modem configured and connecting to the Internet. I write this post via that connection. Thing is I figured out how to config the modem by using Linspire 5.0...imagine that! So I succeeded in configuring my DSL modem for 2 distros.

What I needed was simple instructions. Here they are for all to use. I could not use the DHCP configurator. I use the Static IP configurator.

Go to Kstart/Mepis OS Center/Network Interfaces.
Go to eth0 tab, click Use Static IP-enter your IP, Network, and Gateway addresses from your ISP. For Broadcast Address, use the first 3 sets of numbers from your IP address and enter 255 for the last set of Broadcast numbers. Click Apply.

Go to Misc tab, click Use Static DNS. Enter your Primary DNS and Secondary DNS from your ISP. Click Apply.

Go to Status tab, there are 2 buttons-Stop lo and Stop eth0. Start and stop each one (click twice on each button). This will allow the OS to reset your Network and pick up your addresses.

Click Close. Open your browser. You should be connected to the Internet.

If you are not connected, go back to each tab and verify the numbers you entered. I found that I wasn't connected 'cause I entered a digit in the wrong place.

Happy Surfing!!
