My notebook fan makes extremely high noise

Hi all,

I have a sony vaio PCG-K33 and I am having some serious problems with it.

1. The CPU fan makes an extremely high noise, infact the noise is so loud (not exxagerating) that it can be heard in the next room too. ( hope u get the idea)

2. It generates way too much heat, that it is impossible to put the notebook on the lap and work!

3. The battery life does not last for more than 20min ( I think its because of the fan).

Can anyone tell me ways by which i could reduce the fan speed? or anyideas that could help me reduce any of the above?

Thanks

hardware faulty

i'd be worried about this hardware, with overheating and a noisy fan. reducing the fan speed may cause the whole lot to cook. is it young enough to be under warranty?

CPU fan

Its jus passed the warranty date by 2 weeks. And this problem was not so prevelant in the beginning. So i am not able to figure out if this is a hardware problem or an OS problem( i use WIN XP HOME). I guess this started some 6months back and i have gotten used to the loud sound my laptop makes.

It makes it really embarrasing to take it to the class as it really causes a great deal of disturbance. This is a SONY VAIO PCG-K33.
Please advise anyone looking for this one NOT to buy it at any cost!!

CPU frequency?

Divam, what is the output of this file on your system:
$ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_available_frequencies

let's see if it's possible to slowdown your CPU...

I agree. I had a VAIO a few

I agree. I had a VAIO a few years ago and it was crap. Fortunately, I purchased a 3-year extended warranty with a no lemon clause. After the third repair in less than a year and a half, I chose an Apple iBook G4 as a replacement. It's had it's own issues (it's been in for repair 3 times since last summer), but I'm still happier with it than I was with the VAIO since it runs UNIX under the hood. If you are even considering a VAIO, I highly recommend an extended warranty with a no-lemon clause.

cpu freq

hey dim,

i use a win xp and am not very familiar with the unix commands!
So can you tell me the required command for windows?

Another concern is that, my CPU usage reaches 100% after a small while! I have tried checking for virus, spyware...but did not find much use. Infact, the cpu usage reaches if i open simple applications as video.google or even if i play a movie in the windows media player!

My system config is P4 - 3.1Ghz, 512MB Ram.

CPU speed & FAN

Divam, I expect if you're writing into MEPIS forum you've mepis installed on your laptop Smiling (otherwise, any m$oft forums maybe more helpul? personally, I did not use windoze for last 12 years...)

Anyway, seems the problem you have is due over-speed of your CPU: if your laptop keeps all the time its CPU on the highest possible frequency - it's likely you're driving your car on highest engine TR/s even on 1mph road Smiling

5 years ago I killed with it my old Toshiba laptop (I used RH9 and it did not support CPU speed-step on that time). MEPIS 3.3.1-1 is simply excellent for any laptop and let you play with CPU frequency with few clicks in KLaptop menu. All the time my laptop is running on the _lowest_ freq possible! (and I do everything I need during the day, even watching movies! without any feeling of lower speed, however I don't hear my FAN anymore). And I use higher freq in case I have to recompile a lot of sources, or rip my DVDs, etc.

So, in case you're using MEPIS, you may find one of the solutions here:

I have a sony pcg-v505 and

I have a sony pcg-v505 and have the same problems. I bought a bytecc laptop cooler from newegg and it has cooled it down enough that the internal fan does not come on. It is made out of allumium, and has two fans built in that blow air on the bottom of the laptop.

Sony vaio k33 fan

Hi,

I saw ur posting. Apparently I am having the same problem with my laptop. THe fan makes v v v loud noise. Did you a solution to your problem? If so, please let me know as to what I can do.

Thanks,
Prs

My pcg-k33 was very noisy

My pcg-k33 was very noisy (fan) so I vacuumed the fan opening with a powerful shop vac. This helped alot. I think that the CPU temperature triggers the fan so keeping the cooling system clean is important. As well, there are openings on the bottom for air so it is important to keep the unit on a surface that doesn't impede airflow (on your lap is a bad idea). Mine runs quite quitely now and it used to ROAR. Don

Noisy Fan

My gateway laptop had the same problem with the noisy fan,
it would be a lite noise at first but after the fan ran for a minute it got louder.
So I took it apart to find the problem. I disassembled the fan and bent the metal fins inward that wrap around from the top and bottom of armature to the sides.
I figure that when the fan heated up it would make the metal bend and hit the magnet on the fan.
Hope this helps.
