I have this modem which worked with 3.3 and now will not respond to 3.4.3.... Its claimed to be a V.92 Internal Soft Modem by the mfg. Here are the details.

1MS56S
PCI V.92 MODEM
UPC Code: 8-59223-00003-4 ???

FEATURES
Smartlink PCI solution
Designed for Microsoft Windows (WHQL)
56Kbps download speed from Internet
ITU-V.92/V.90/V.34+/V.32/V.22bis
Quick Connect
Modem-on-Hold
Upstream up to 48Kbps
Telephone Answering Machine (TAM) and Voice Mail Operations
Enhanced ADPCM Codec
Driver-Supports Windows 98 / ME / NT4.0 / 2000 / XP /Red Hat Linux

Now on this web site one of our compatriots claims that we should

"Go here to purchase a brand new HA56C Agere PCI Modem from Hummingbird."

This modem is not a a V.92 Internal Soft Modem but is a V.92 Internal Controllerless Modem. Whats the diffrence between soft modem and a controllerless modem?

Since my 1ms56s modem use to work for 3.3 and also is claimed to work for red hat linux by mfg., I wonder if getting another modem is the answer? Is this just going to waste more of my time? and money? When the answer is somewhere else?\

What is the underlaying cause of this incompatablity?

Buying an external serial modem is a thought but some of the posts mention problems with those too.
Your suggestions and comments much welcomed.
In the modem trench.

Controllerless and Soft Modem

Hi Peter. Both of the terms "controllerless-" and "soft-" modem refer to the fact that the modem "has no smarts". The "controller", rather than being in hardware (in the modem), exists in "software". Both of these terms, in turn, are what are referred to in the Linux world as "Winmodems". So generally, if you have one of these modems you must use some tool such as ndiswrapper to configure and use them.

I do not have a modem on my box and so am not a good source of information on using ndiswrapper. However, there are many good links on this site and mepislovers that discuss it.

Jon

ndiswrapper is for wireless

ndiswrapper is seldom used for modems, mostly for wireless

I have never got any of my 3 winmodems to work

Maybe I should try ndiswrapper

Stratitec IC56A Internal Modem

Hi Peter,
I am sorry you are having modem troubles. To answer your request
for an example of a working internal modem under SimplyMepis 3.4.3
Final, I use the Stratitec IC56A 56K PCI Internal Modem on a PC that
I setup a friend from church on. I convinced her to wipe Windows XP
and go SimplyMepis. This modem was plug and play as the driver already
exists in the kernal for it! It was only $23.95 and I bought it from
my local Wal-Mart Electronics department. It comes in a bubble
package and I used it to replace the U.S. Robotics internal WinModem
that would not work due to its proprietary driver nature. You can go
to www.stratitec.com/ic56a for their Linux Installtion Guide. All I
had to do was setup the dialup account info in the KPPP dialer and
it works great.

I have a thinkpad a20m with

" quote:

"

I have a thinkpad a20m with a lucent internal winmodem working from the live CD Mepis 6.0. It also worked on the earlier Mepis 3.4.3 For reference,
lspci reports the following:
Communication controller: Agere Systems WinModem 56k (rev 01)

You can try that command (lspci) to see how closely your modem matches mine.

Unfortunately, I have no Idea why it works for me and not for others. But it does work. See

Though, this will not get yours working.
