Example Working Plug and Play Internal Modem
Posts: 5
Hello,
I am posting this message to help all those struggling
to get their internal modem cards working for dialup internet
access under SimplyMepis 3.4.3 Final. Go buy a Stratitec
IC56A 56K PCI internal modem card for your pc. I setup a
friend from church's pc with SimplyMepis and this internal
modem. It was plug and play using the KPPP dialer program to
setup her internet dialup account and works great without
having to make any adjustments. The nice thing about this
internal modem card is that the driver is already a part of
the SimplyMepis kernal so you don't have to figure out where
to get a linux driver for it or how to install it as its
already taken care of for you in the kernal. Also, this modem
card only cost $23.95 from my local Wal-Mart store. You can
find out more at www.stratitec.com/ic56a.

Bought one on the basis of this recommendation. No dice. Upon connect KPPP reports modem ready (regardless of device/port selected) and then modem does not respond. The website indicates the driver module is included in Simply Mepis so why wouldn't it work? I'm really trying to use Linux but this modem issue is driving me nuts.

Hello burdicda,
Trying to follow your link and can not reach it. Would you please elaborate. Not only the price but a working modem would be great.
I am using an old Hayes external modem. It is not the fastest in the world but it does work everytime and only cost $1 at a flea market. However, it is taking up the serial port that I use for downloading my digital camera and that is a pain to connect and disconnect. Seems the wrong one is always connected.
Looking forward to your answer.

P.S. In the meantime, I will check out the modem from WalMart.

Thanks very much mike I, shall investigate this modem right away. I have posted on other forums about dial-up connectivity without useful results. I guess 90% of forum users are DSL / Broadband users. Do you know if this modem you speak of works in Ubuntu 6.06?

*bump*
Yes this should be useful info for a lot of people here. Before I got DSL I used an external serial modem because the internals were such a pain to deal with in linux. The price ain't bad either.
