wireless cards no luck :( Prismiq (zd1211) and DWL-G520 *SOLVED*

I have been messing with Mepis 3.4-3 for the last 2 weeks and love the system it configures everything including my on board ethernet adapter, sound, video. Plays DVD'S JUST Awesome. My problem is this. I have 2 wireless cards one is a usb pen Prismiq based on the zd1211 driver and the other is D-Link DWL-G520. I have ran Ndiswrapper till im blue in the face. Has anyone got either of these of Cards working. From the graphical networking tool it shows the DWL-G520 there working. Connects to my router assigns the IP but I dont get internet. The Prismiq however is another beast. Get nothing. Last night I installed Hotplug and it deleted my network config. (had to reinstall mepis) If anyone has got either of the cards working is there a walkthrough you can post or lead me too. I have used oh about 10 different walkthroughs for the D-link and 3 different walkthroughs for the prismiq. Any help would greatly appreciated. also if you know of a card that just works let me know im game for that too! I would rather get the current hardware working but buying a new wireless adapter is not is out of the question. I would liek to make mepis my fulltime system. Right now I have a duel boot going on with XP. THEY JUST CANT CO-EXIST! LOL

Try kwifimanager

This is for the d-link card, not the usb dongle. I know the d-link works because I had one.

With your d-link card inserted, boot your laptop and type kdesu kwifimanager into the run command dialogue, click the run button, then click the scan for networks button.

A window should open with Available Networks and the SSID name of your AP. When you see that, your card is correctly configured and you are less than 1 minute from a successful connection.

Open meauto (MEPIS config) tiny icon close the the K menu, top line third accross, enter your root password, click on Network Interfaces and observe the line that reads "wireless on ethX" where X is the device number for your wireless card. Normally, it's eth1

If any devices in the Status tab show can't connect, click the stop button for that card.

Click on the Wifi tab and next to ESS id, type in the ssid (case sensitive) of your AP as reported by kwifimanager and click Apply.

Edit the settings for the wireless device under it's ethX tab, wether you want it to start at boot or when a card is inserted, wether you want it to use DHCP (or a static address, edit as required) and click Apply.

Go back to the Status tab and start the appropriate device.

You should be cruising wirelessly within a few seconds and kiwfimanager should show the signal strength.

You can change the kwifimanager's settings to stay in the system tray on close and to show the signal strength as a number, which is really cool, but you may have to do this as a user, not as root to get it to stick for your preferred user.

If you need to roam, or connect to a different AP, you'll need to set the ssid for that AP before you can connect, then set it back when you get home to re-connect to yours.

Cheers

wireless cards no luck :( Prismiq (zd1211) and DWL-G520

Oh boy I should have explained better. The wireless card I have is a PCI in a desktop computer. I did try your suggestion and yes Kwifi detects the network and shows my AP. Nice signal too. My card the D-link DWL-G520 is setup in os config as ath0 . It says wireless is on ath0. Ive been wrestling with this for about 2 weeks. At least I can get on with a 25 foot lan cable man this distro is just the best! Would be even better if I could get my wireless working and unplug. I have even reset the router to factory setting which is a D-link dl-714p+. is there maybe something in the router that might need to be config?

Ray of hope

I was toying around with kwifi manager and os config. then launched firefox it loaded 1 page Yahoo. Then it wouldnt load anymore Hmmm very strange. I have done nothing with ndiswrapper this time around im working with a brand new install of mepis. The DWL-G520 loaded 1 page. When it loaded the page it was very slow.

Maybe all is not lost.

I found with my system that if I had more than one network interface running, I got nowhere - probably because the router saw 2 of the same machine names on the same network.

Make sure you're not trying to use more than one device.

If you can see the signal using kwifimanager, then your card is working. This is probably a stupid question, but have you tried it with the live CD only?

Open a terminal window and ping all the known IP addresses you have in your network, starting with your AP's address. E.G.
ping -c4 10.1.1.1

The -c4 limits the number of pings.

If you can ping your AP and get a good return, try pinging another PC on the network if you have one using it's ip address. After that, ping it by it's name.

for instance, if alpha was the name of a one of the networked PC's, and it's ip adress was 10.1.1.7, which responded when you pinged it, replace the 10.1.1.7 with aplha to see if you get the same result.

Check your routers firewall settings too.

That's as far as I can go when we're half way round the world from each other. I'm in NZ. (GMT +12:00)

Well its been fixed But not with Mepis :(

Well I got real tired of toying around with these wireless cards. I only tried one card at a time. I was really trying to get the DWL-G520 to work. I only gave the prismiq usb card a few tries then gave up and went back to the dlink pci card.

I fixed the problem but not using mepis. Im kinda bummed about it because mepis is a much slicker OS than PCLinuxOS. However PClinuxOS configured everything right from the install. I didnt even have to configure wireless. from the install I click on firefox and holy cow it just worked. im using my usb prismiq card I bought at newegg for 19.99 works great. I wish it worked in mepis but I guess thems the breaks. Thanks for the suggestions and help

Should be back to mepis in a few days

I picked up this on ebay Hawking wireless-G PCI card (HWP54G). the card has been known to autodetect with mepis. I won it on ebay for 2.99. Woohoo! Windancer<------ Crosses fingers.

MEPIS works WiFi and then don't

HI,
Version 3.4-3-LiveCd works with my old DataMiniPC (PATA drives) when I unload all preexisting WiFi drivers shown by ndiswrapper -l and then reload my windows driver. Modprobe ndiswrapper will then see wlan0 on iwconfig command which can be configured to success.
The problem now is with my new SATA-drive Dell PC, modprobe ndiswrapper hangs the system. Everything else works. Also depmod -a gives an error on writing a Read only file.
Does anyone experience this on SATA drives? I suspect ndiswrapper versions before 1.9 fails on certain chipsets and I cannot recompile new ndis versions on the Mepis 3.4-3 Live CD. Any help will be greatly appre. again!!

same problem

when I loaded the windows driver with ndiswrapper I got a system hang also. Well more like a lockup. LOL I bought the hawking card hoping I can reinstall mepis. PCLinuxos is actually a really good system but I like a mepis a bit better. I should get that card today or friday at the latest. I will post results when I pop that in.

Yep the Card is Magic!

Hawking wireless-G PCI card (HWP54G) Just works nothing to configure. Im back in mepis and very happy everything works! Thanks so much. Pclinuxos is good too But scares you with a very windows looking os LOL

I'm currently using a D-Link

I'm currently using a D-Link DWL-520+ wireless card (ACX100 chip) that works out of the box in Mepis 3.4-3, with ndiswrapper, once I set up my WEP in OScenter. I know this card works well with the open source acx100 driver as well and I plan on compiling that soon for my kernels. Since I have no wired connection currently, I've been relying on the wireless and it's been fast and stable.
