New User's Mepis CD Stuck in Laptop

Purchased Point & Click Linux. Loaded its Mepis CD into Compeq Presario 900 to boot on CD It did without any changes and runs from CD. Have been unable to remove. Won't eject when rumming on CD and won't eject when shut down- no power. Got into BIOS highlighted Harddrive in boot sequence (which I guess should be the first in sequence)(in order listed Floppy, ATAPI CD-ROM, HD, Network boot) pressed F10 to save changes and exit but it still boots from the CD. This computer does not have a floppy. I've tried several times to make it boot from the HD (which has WinXP) so I can remove the Mepis CD (want to install on another computer). Any suggestions on how to remove the CD? Thanks, Phil

On any laptop I've tried, the CD drive's Eject button works while you're in the CMOS setup screen. The CD shouldn't be locked in at that stage...

Unless, of course, you have a hardware problem that has cropped-up.
I have seen stranger coincidences.

I had the same problem. The only way I could find to eject the CD is to reboot the computer and press the button that puts you into the BIOS setup screens. In BIOS setup, the CD eject button on my CD ROM drive worked again and I was able to eject the CD.
I have found that this problem in not being able to eject the CD (until you go into the BIOS setup) is common with many Toshiba laptops.

Have a close look at the CD

Have a close look at the CD tray on the laptop. There should be a tiny hole in the tray itself, near the button or near the LED display.
If you find the hole, you can straighten out a paperclip, and slide it gently into the hole until you feel some resistance.
Press gently and the tray latch mechanism should release.
Then, get a KNOPPIX live CD and boot with that. See if it ejects when you shut Knoppix down. If it does, the CD drive is fine. If it does not, there is a fault with the drive.
Unlike Mepis, Knoppix developers have worked out that you can make a CD eject automatically on shutdown after running live and after installing.
This makes it easy to check your problem.
