Hi guys
I am totally new to Linux, I tried the live CD , it works fine, I have now installed to my hard disk and dual booting with XP windows as the main booter. Both are on sepaerate disks. I use a Lan card to connect to windows network in my neighbourhood comunity all using Windows, the servers that i conect to are all microsoft.Inter browsing and networking ,samba everything works fine the only problem that I am facing is I can not get any messengers to work on my Mepis.
I have set up everything accordingly , all the Ip adresses for the server , DNs entry and gateway are all used as the same in windows. The messengers (yahoo,MSN, ICQ) all work fine on windows but non works on Mepis.(Kopete and even the yahoo messenger i downloaded from yahoo site for the Debian version)do not work.
i tried using "proxy", "no proxy", "noproxy only firewall" but it stops at connecting........ thats it.
I will be grateful if someone can assist me or what need to get it connected.

just check your own firewall , using guarddog, and see if in the internet section, the 'chat' parts are allowed.

My 1st guess would also be the firewall, but since you disabled that....
let's see, another possible cause might be DNS or some routing issue. If you find out which server the chat client connects to and which port it uses, you can go to a console and do sth like:
telnet server.domain.sth
If that succeeds, you know you have connection. If it keeps failing, it is a network issue. What if you do 'host servername.etc.etc'?? Does it get resolved?
Newbie or not Newbie, there's always a question
any feed back please
