I thought this was fixed? usb camera and thumb drive?

I thought this worked? Or have I messed up something? It wouldn't surprise me in the least if I have.
Anyway, this is the behavior I now see in Mepis 3.4:
-It doesn't recognize my Fuji FinePix A210 as a camera. I have to turn it on and reboot for it to be recognized at all (as a usb thumb drive, sdb1).
-much the same with at least one of my usb thumb drives, which is recognized as sdb, only if present while booting.
I thought this was working. Am I misremembering? It could have been PCLinuxOS or another distro, I do like to see how other distros are doing. I even used PCLOS while Mepis was in the upgrade doldrums
I did a quick search on Google and got the usual mix, nothing definite.
Any help appreciated.

Thanks for your input, timkb4cq. There are some difficulties with Linux, along with its advantages. I guess I'll muddle through.

I had my USB drives working just fine until I upgraded KDE to 3.5.1.
After that they stopped showing up on the desktop, although I could mount them manually from the CLI.
Upgrading hal to 0.5.6-4 with Synaptic got them showing on the desktop again, but they wouldn't mount until I created the /media/sda1 and /media/sdb1 directories, which is where the desktop icons want to mount them.
