Hi there. I have an issue with mepis 3.4-3 final release (rc4 worked fine).
It's odd, everything is like *2 faster. Sounds, animations, clock...
I use a presario M2000. Ask me if u need more details ^^

Try boot parameters
noapictimer irqpoll
and also check the HP web site for a BIOS update <<<=== most important
You add boot parameters to the GRUB boot screen on the line that usually ends in vga=791 (your cursor will be there -- type the parameters)
If they work you can edit /boot/grub/menu.lst as root to make them permanent
If they don't work read thru the post and the link to ubuntu forum for other boot parameters to try
