FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
9 A.M. EDT, April 19, 2006

Morgantown, WV, April 19, 2006: MEPIS founder Warren Woodford has announced the alpha2 release of SimplyMEPIS 6.0. The ISO image is available for download and testing in the mepis 'testing' subdirectory at the MEPIS Subscriber's Site and public mirrors. For up to 7 days, please send feedback to

Alpha2 primarily incorporates suggestions from the MEPIS user community and package updates. For example, the Utilities and Development menus have been reorganized. To reduce the clutter in SystemSettings, the input device configurations have been placed in a submenu.

Bluetooth has been disabled by default, since it causes problems on some machines that do not support bluetooth. A mouse initialization bug only seen when running from CD with some Toshiba laptops has been worked around.

The transitional MEPIS OS Center was modified to handle configuration of both new and legacy nvidia drivers. KDE's hard drive media notification popups have been suppressed during installation.

Alpha2 was synchronized with the Ubuntu Dapper pools around 7PM on April 19. The MEPIS pools have been updated to include the latest version of the transitional MEPIS OS Center and other MEPIS provided packages. The apt config was modified to insure that MEPIS package overrides would take precedence in Kpackage. This already worked correctly in Synaptic.

SimplyMEPIS 6.0 is scheduled for final release around June 1, 2006. Beta1 is planned for approximately April 26.
