No characters type within Root Login or APT update of KPackage only.

I have attempted to update Kpackage by clicking Special, then APT, then update on three desktop computers using Mepis Kernal 2.6.7, with or without wireless keyboards and when asked to insert my password after Root Login: not a single character will type in this window, nor in APT update. I character sign in and enter root privilages when called upon under differant circumstances. I really need help on this because I cannot get any characters to enter and of course no OK button displays either, just the CANCEL button. I need to install the Linux Opera browser and AVG Linux Anti Spyware that are now downloaded on this computer ready to install. Waiting patiently for an answer. Thanks in Advance. Gene
