LT modem works in Mepis 4.3 perfectly but has problem in Mepis 6.0r2 Newbie

Hello Evereone,
I how brought or downloaded at least 20 different distro's and only Mepis 4.3 and Linspire come with LTModem support.
I liked Mepis more than Linspire as who wants a Windows look alike any way if that's what I wanted I would be using Windows and wouldn't be here on this forum.
Basically I brought Mepis 4.3 by Mail and install it and straight away i was on the internet with no problems.
As I read Distrowatch daily I was happy to see that Mepis 6.0r2 was ready for download and couldn't wait to see what it offered.
It took 4 days on Dial up to get my copy and install it.
For some straight reason I can't get on the internet.
What happens is that Mepis 6.0r2 finds my modem dials up my ISP provider and at the last moment times out.
In the Log it seems to be having trouble starting ppp.
I compared the setting in the configure screen of KPPP on both 4.3 and 6.0 and they are the same except for the version of the LTmodem Driver.
As I am a Newbie and have no Idea were to look or what to look at can anyone give me some ideas to fix this problem.

Please help as I would like to use 6.0 instead of 4.3

Hello Everybody, As far as

Hello Everybody,
As far as Winmodems Go it looks like nobody who has the knowledge and experience to get compatable LtModems working with Linux want to help all the Newbies out there.
With all the testing and forum reading I have done on the many different distro forums out there the above comment seems to relate to all of them.
Luckily Mepis comes with a LT modem driver and this got me on the net.
As I got no replies to my modem problem with 6.0r2 as it looks like all you educated linux users / programmers have had enough and no longer reply to modem questions, I have turned my Mepis 4.3 into a KDE 3.5 Version from the Debian etch pool.
I had a side effect where I have lost the ability to log on as root on the log on screen, but that doesn't worry me as i can still log in as SU on my user log in.
While it's not perfect, I have a usable Linux Distro.

First of all I would like to encourage you to persevere because I have a thinkpad a20m with a lucent internal winmodem working from the live CD Mepis 6.0. It also worked on the earlier Mepis 3.4.3

For a description of time out with the live CD see

I only experienced one time out, then it connected on the next try.

Adjust modem settings in KPPP

I got my internal Lucent/Agere modem to work with Mepis 6.0. The ltmodem driver installs "out of the box" and is configured as /dev/ttySM0, with /dev/modem linked to /dev/ttySM0.

In KPPP, I clicked on Configure --> Modems --> MyModem --> Edit. Then, I changed the port speed to 115200, closed the dialog boxes, reopened the dialog boxes, then clicked on Query Modem to configure the modem, and closed the dialog boxes. After setting the Account options (only the phone number was needed), I clicked on Connect, and everything worked flawlessly.

I have a Gateway 700S LTD system (1.8Ghz Pentium 4, 256MB of RAM, 160GB drive, nVidia GeForce2 MX 440) of which I replaced the Broadcom modem with a Lucent/Agere modem I had in storage. Currently, MEPIS 6.0 takes up the entire 160GB of space.

You people have a great product, and a potential Vista killer.

Well I Must Agree

It looks like I'm gonna have to roll up my sleeves
Setup two identical boxes and debug this b@stard

Works perfectly on the exact same box booted to
3.3.1-1 Mepis lite and just using /dev/modem
The oldest version you can get your hands on

But on 6.0 and 6.5 it missed the train
with all the kings horses and all the kings men

Even comes up during boot and tells you proprietary driver
taints kernel.

The modem is an agere lt winmodem and connects but cannot see
anything coming back thru the serial port to it from the isp
thus it times out cause the isp can't see you poll it for
handshaking.......

The same modem works fine with 3.3.1-1
Damn Damn Damn
why must they orphan hardware.....
Like the marines....leave no one behind....damn it !!!

Always in a big hurry to get out the latest and greatest
cutesy 3d b*llshit and fancy pansy 64bit stuff at what
cost....?

Folks who've been workin just fine for years...since the very beginning of Mepis are left out in the cold...
