internet connection by laptop modems

I am currently using version 2.6.7 on a dell D610, but I'd like to change to the newest version of Mepis 3.4-3. The trouble is that with the new version loaded on my laptop, I can not access either of my modems. I am using an exterior serial modem and a PCMCIA modem. With the older Mepis, both modems work and work well at dev/modem for the pcmcia, and dev/ttyso with the exterior serial modem. With the new version of Mepis, however, neither of my modems can be accessed using the same or other addresses.

Can anyone tell me what the adresses: dev/tty/SO, and dev/modem in the old version of Mepis translate to in the new version? I ask for I have tried and nothing from the new version seems to work.
