Cant use Synaptic or install programs on the live CD

I have had Mepis install on my hard drive in the past and I enjoyed using.
Right now I am using 6.0 beta 1 (liveCD) and I cannot use synaptic or install a program using apt-get while using the LiveCD. i get this message when using either Synaptic or apt-get:

W: Not using locking for read only lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock
E: Unable to write to /var/cache/apt/
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

What does this mean and if I install it on my hard drive will I have this same problem?

Also why is Kaffeine used as the default player? I would at least like to be able to right click on the link or have a window pop when I click on a streaming media link that where I could choose to open with what program I choose.

Re: Synaptic

Synaptic will work just fine on a hard drive install. Running from the LiveCD it will not work, because the directories it has to write the downloaded software to are on the (read-only) CD. See the conflict?

As far as Kaffeine goes, you can always change the default player for each media type in Konqueror.

Have Fun

Synaptic - livecd

I am looking for the perfect "livecd" to use on my laptop while traveling.
I have been using PCLinuxOS. Sipmly Mepis appears to be equally good, in fact better due to having the "onthego" facility.
The only drawback I found that Mepis does not allow the use of Synaptic while PCLinux does. I realize that this install would only work until the next reboot, yet it would be useful, especially for those with large RAM.

Yep, I would like that too.

Yep, I would like that too. I guess it wasn't a priority for Warren. I guess it would need UnionFS or something like that...
