What are your thoughts on FTP?

I use ftp almost daily in the update of static websites and for downloads of many items on a regular basis leave the ftp program in the OS please. The main reason for gFTP is the ease of use when ssl is required to access servers. It is really a keeper.

I just may not be familiar enough with the Konqueror functions as an FTP client but I'm not generally a fan of the all-singing-all-dancing apps.

I have used gFTP and find it appropriate.

Can't comment on KFTPGrabber or Casablanca. Do they have enough development support?

I suppose with so many apps to chose from a case could be made that if Konqueror works as a basic FTP client it is sufficient and helps to keep the ISO's to a single CD.

I usually work with gFTP. I find it satisfactory.

I too do not like all in one apps, so I have never used konqueror for ftping.

the ftp programs that come with mepis work just fine for me.please keep them in.

PLEASE do NOT remove gFTP Add whatever else might be needed, but leave gFTP alone!

I use only Krusader for any (S)FTP operations (and many other too), so if Krusader is currently on the list, I don't care about the other mentioned apps

I always use gftp as my ftp-client. Please keep it in Mepis.
Don't include Kasablanca; it really sucks (unless it was dramatically improved over the last 18 months...).

I am only an occasional user of ftp, but do need it every now and again. My own preference is for gFTP: it works and does what it is supposed to well.

Emelbert, I have used konq for FTP and found it perfectly satisfactory,
but I have not tried any of the others you mention. Hence my opinion on
this question is worthless.

May I suggest, however, that you should ignore all comments from people
who have not tried both konq and at least one of the others?

If anybody who has used konq has a definite preference for gFTP etc., then obviously their views should be heard; but otherwise why bloat the distro
with programs which simply duplicate a facility already provided?

I use the gftp and it works just fine. I looked in Konqueror and didn't readily see how you use it for FTP. Whatever you use for FTP needs to be easily recognizable IMO if Mepis is going to continue to cater to the new user. Another thought could be the FireFTP extension for FF....

I don't really agree with that sentiment; if I have never tried anything but Konq, it is because I have never found Konqueror's ftp capabilities lacking. Personally, I think Konqueror & kio-slaves is great; why learn a completely new interface for every protocol you have to hook to?

It seems you are really in the same camp as me.

But I think these people begging for gFTP etc. are being rather
silly if they have not tried konq. Even if they cannot get on with
konq after trying, they can always apt-get whatever other program
they want.

I only recently revisited the FTP clients mentioned above plus KBear.
Having used KBear ages ago I recalled its graphic interface being very intuitive.
However - after the revisit, although the interface is very good, stability is rather lacking ( creator acknowledges this - time constraints etc )
I also tried the other clients mentioned & found most to be incomplete.
So... I have now come to accept gFTP's interface shortcomings for the fact that once set up it is a rock solid.
As with the Mepis / Ubuntu collaboration maybe gFTP could go visit KBear for a few clues as to a smoother interface.
Do we need an FTP client - YES - absolutely.

Low learning curve, relatively easy to configure, stable.

I rely on it being there when I need it.

gFtp is my choice. It works the best, and does what you want it to.

If it were up to me I'd say stick with Konqueror... if somebody wants anything else let them apt-get it. That's what apt and synaptec are good for.

Personally I prefer KBear, but to each his own. Since you can't please all of the people all of the time, let them choose their own cake to have. Or to eat as the case may be.

Trying to keep an open mind, I just tried gFTP for the first time.

Must admit I can't seriously fault it, but konq also works perfectly
well. If by leaving gFTP out of the distro you could make room for
khexedit or midnight commander, I would choose that course.

I like KGet. When FTP up or down a large file like an iso Konqueror keeps konking out on me, but KGet works.

I have tried many different FTP clients, and the only two I like are Konq and FireFTP extension to Firefox. But since many people do not realize that Konq can be used for FTP (I had to be told), it's a good idea to include a specific FTP client with Mepis.

I only use Konqueror, Gftp and the CLI.

I use Filezilla at work and gftp at home becuase the layout is similar, so i would say please keep gftp.

I personally prefer Krusader for FTP.

Personally, I use Konqueror and gftp, as of lately, I seems to use Konqueror alot, I just fine it easier and faster to use.
