MEPIS 6.0 loses winmodem
Posts: 305
Since I turned to MEPIS a couple of years ago b/c it handled wireless modem without problem, I was extremely disappointed when I installed MEPIS 6 B2 last night and found out that the modem no longer works OOTB.
My laptop is a Dell 700m with a Dell Wireless 1350 WLAN Mini-PCI Card Rev 4.5 using the chipset BCM4306/BCM 2050. Since it has a dual boot with XP, I know the modem and the network work fine--and it worked without problem in MEPIS 3.4.3.
Unless somebody has a bright idea of a quick solution, I guess I have to reinstall MEPIS 3.4.3 and hope the final release corrects this problem. This for me is a major step backwards.
Thanks for any advice--or sympathy!

when in doubt, run in circles, scream and shout
i am using 6rc1 and i bought a pci modem with 536ep chipset. mepis 6 picked it up and kppp used it with no problem. the driver is already in mepis. got the modem at newegg for $8 and $4 shipping. 10 minute replacement for 537ep in my dell 3000. very happy with it in mepis. strange thing though, i lit up a live cd of ubuntu 6.0.6 and it recognized modem but did not have driver available. hope this helps. marku

6.0b2 is old news now 6.0 final is out there now but it may be a little early for anyone to make a call on that modem . I cant gurantee it will work for you but i would download 6.0 final and give it a try. In the meantime maybe someone will come by that has an idea or fix. Warren has worked very hard to make it a keeper , I havent had time personally to spin it up but reports so far look very promising. Good luck!

Don't have a broadcom myself, but I read about some issues here on the forum. I believe the solution was to blacklist the broadcom driver and use Ndiswrapper instead. If you do a search here or on mepislovers you will surely find more info.
