Guidelines for Upgrading SimplyMEPIS 6.0

If you are running a SimplyMEPIS 6.0 Beta release, you can upgrade your system by using Synaptic.

MEPIS pools are usually updated within 24 hours of a new release. By doing an upgrade, your system should be approximately 99.9% the same as a fresh install. Since we can't guarantee 100% accuracy with an upgrade, we would prefer that testers still perform fresh installs before providing feedback. If you do an upgrade and submit feedback, please specify that you did an upgrade.

Guidelines for Upgrading Packages with MEPIS

1. The best tool for performing an upgrade is Synaptic. While KPackage is good, we find that Synaptic honors our configuration better.

2. DO NOT DO A DIST-UPGRADE! Doing a dist-upgrade with MEPIS can get you into trouble. Instead, just do an upgrade (using Synaptic) or package install or upgrade (manually using apt-get).

3. If you are installing packages from the MEPIS pool and you are prompted about installing a newer version of a MEPIS configuration file, choose the newer version unless you are an expert user. If you are installing packages from any other pool and are prompted about installing a newer configuration file, keep the file you currently have. Particularly with KDE packages, upgrading to a non-MEPIS config file could mess up your MEPIS KDE configuration.
