[Solved] Problem with Gimp in 6 b3

T Case's picture

Hi all
I am currently running Mepis 6 beta 3 and have a problem with Gimp. It appears to start, the splash with the progress indicators shows that it gets as far as "querying new plugins" -> xscanimage then seems to hang, the splash finally vanishes and nothing more happens. Top or Ksysguard tell me that gimp2 is running.
I upgraded to the latest version in the repositories to see if that would help but no improvement.

Gimp

Can you kinda fill us in on what youre trying to do ,are you trying to touchup something youve scanned ? Reason i ask my install of 6.0B3 and gimp work fine . Maybe a few more particulars will help corner the problem .

No problem with mine, using HP PSC 1410 USB

This is a fresh install, fresh home, no install upgrade, no kept home data, no APT update or upgrade. Plugins load, scanner just scans - IBM Thinkpad R50 Smiling
ALso have beta 3 running on a beta 2 upgrade, with kept home, and full APT update/upgrade using a HP Scanjet 5200 USB, old DELL box, just works.
My only idea is to try un-installing Gimp and reinstalling.

I also did a reinstall

That didn't work either !

Just for grins

...try removing the gimp directory:

rm -rf .gimp-2.2

or whatever directory name you find with ls -a, then restart gimp. Or try creating a dummy user account, and run gimp from there to see if it will work.

T Case's picture

I tried removing the .directory

but that had no effect, I'll try a dummy user.

T Case's picture

Well, there's a bugger

I created a new user and tried Gimp, no problems at all, Gimp worked perfectly. I restarted as myself, zilch. Nothing on screen but there in top.
I notice that xscanimage and xsane that Gimp calls as plugins are sitting at 50% - 70% in the cpu column of top and Gimp is failing at the scan plugins stage ! ? ! ?

A flash of inspiration

Quite unusual, I started Gimp and then in KSysGuard, killed the xsane and xscanimage processes, Gimp then came up as normal. Now I can uninstall xsane but so far haven't found out where xscanimage lives.
Stop press
I have removed xsane and Gimp now starts as usual, very odd as it didn't work before I installed xsane.

re: inspiration

Possibly the simplest fix would have been to remove any references to xsane and/or xscanimage from

~/.gimp1.2/plug-ins/

As I mentioned removing the ~/gimp2.2 directory completely I doubt that would have helped.

Gimp is not the problem

Hi,
I'm having exactly the same problems with 6b3 and Gimp, but I think the problem is not that gimp is not starting, but that any scan related programm doesn't start. Xscanimage, xsane and kooka vanish after starting and appear in ksysguard using 50-70% of the system.

That sounds about right, I don't often use the scanner (not at all recently) and removing xsane certainly let Gimp work and the CPU useage matches as well.

Yep, same thing going on

Yep, same thing going on with my MEPIS 6.0-RC1. GIMP kinda loads, but not into the interface. Any other ideas?

Dont know if this has anything to do with it but i just looked at the permissions in /etc/group and my username wasnt setup in saned . Its normally used by tha gimp but i dont have it installed yet. Its not by backup either , been having trouble with that keep program too just dawned on me to have a look.

jim ;;EDIT;; I just installed gimp using apt-get without adding myself to saned , and gimp works fine ! So permissions dont seem to be any help.

Gimp and 6rc2

Gimp starts to load and quits at xaned in 6rc2. I tried adding myself as user in etc/group but that didn't help. Kooka does not load either.

This is show stopper as my wife is after me to get her website running. I can do her graphics on her machine with Fedora 3 but at 3:00 am. ;-(

Any help will be appreciated

Problem with Gimp in 6 b3

I have been playing with this on a problem machine of mine it seems a packag or packages dont get installed to tell the system the scanner is there. In one instance on this rig i found mepis-auto didnt install. However before i discovered that removing kooka allowed gimp to load it couldnt see the scanner either though but it worked . I havent been able to resume the quest for the problem lately , another package was inadvertantly omitted from the iso i think it was posted on the main page.

The good or bad news is rc3 doesnt have this problem on my rig . Unfortunately unless a fix can be found it looks like an install of 6.0rc3 may be needed or hang tough for a few days till the final 6.0 is released.

By the way the same install disk was used on all my rigs two worked the other didnt.

Fixing HOLDUP on xscanimage in GIMP solved

The following will fix the Holdup on xscanimage in GIMP on MEPIS...

Remove xscanimage plugin from GIMP.
Located at /usr/lib/gimp/2.0/plug-ins
Delete xscanimage. (you might need to end the process first in KSysGuard).
This should fix the GIMP Loading problem

NOTE: You must have root privelages to remove this plugin.
Click on the KStartMenu > System > File System > File Manager - Super User Mode. Will give you root privelages to remove xscanimage if you're logged in as a different user.

Sorry but if you want xscanimage you'll have to wait for a patch or something fixing the hold up. Or maybe do an independant search for xscanimage and use that plugin from www.gimp.org.

Works for me

I don't know a lot about Linux.

But, xcanimage works fine for me in the Gimp, running under SimplyMEPIS 6.0 Final.

I have updated everything updatable, and I don't know if I installed the Gimp before or after making the first update (most likely after).

But, it works with no problems for me (using an HP PSC-1400 Multi-Function printer as the scanner).

I did have a quirk trying to get the printer installed originally. You can't actually install the printer via the CUPS Web Interface (as you could with previous SimplyMEPIS Versions).

Instead, you have to install one using the KDE interface (KControl, Peripherals, Printers), and you need to pick the second printer choice that shows up (the one with the underscore characters in it), as it will show up in the list of available printers more than once. Otherwise, you can print but not scan, and the HPLIP Toolbox won't work.

Picking the second printer choice in the list when installing one via KDE Control Center solves both issues.

Check whether Running Beta or Not.

I have Frontier MEPIS PRO DVD on mine. But how do you check to see what version it is??? I got MEPIS and am running it for a possible Partnership with TaFusion. I'm just curious to know how to check the version.

Bad Dog's picture

what version

Just put the MEPIS cd in the drive and open it, you will find a plain text document by the name of "Version". And welcome to MEPIS. Smiling

Again, I don't know much

Again, I don't know much about Linux. But, a quick Google Search found this thread with a few ways to check:

http://www.mepis.org/node/10391

In /etc/issue on my PC, I see this now (but, I have been updating anything that can be updated via Synaptic):

Ubuntu 6.06.1 LTS \n \l

Looking in System Configuration, System Administration, Login Manager, Appearance, Greeting, I see SimplyMEPIS 6.0

If you guys have any trouble with setting up MEPIS then post a thread and I'll be keeping my eye out. I've been using linux for about 2 years now and I love MEPIS.

This issue reported previously

Hi TCase & all,

First, xscanimage 'lives' in sane ( read text of sane on a Synaptic search )

I discussed this Gimp problem with Warren recently just after Ver 6 came out when we also had a (different) problem with Mozilla Suite installation at that time. A fix was released within 24-48 hours.

However re Gimp - at that time Warren was unable to replicate the problem so it obviously doesn't affect all.

In the meantime the quickest way around it seems to be simply remove sane - Run Gimp again & this time it will go through past that stop point where it can't seem to find that plugin & Gimp is forever contented.

Reinstall sane again afterwards & all seems to continue to run smoothly.

So far this seems to have worked for all & I guess when Warren finally gets a chance to catch his breath then he will, &/or with our input as well find an answer.

I'll be keeping my eye out.

Thanks, the way they keep changing the rules in this Linux game we can use all the help we can get. I'm a whole lot more handy with hardware than software, when it come's to command line syntax, well it just blows my mind. That is my main attraction to MEPIS, Warren has made some good tools to help those that are syntax challenged. I have been playing with Unix/Linux for a little over 7 yrs now and a full time Linux user for 4 yrs.

I believe we achieved a workable solution for the OP issue.
Unless there are any objections from the front row, I'll mark this as being solved.
