SimplyMEPIS 6.0 beta4

Hello,

This morning beta4 appeared on the Mepis ftp-server for subscribers. I noticed already from the size of the .iso (694 MB) that approx. 20 MB extra space was needed: SimplyMEPIS 6.0 beta4 comes with Xara LX and Sun Java 5.0 Web start.

The kernel used is the Mepis 2.6.15-23-386 kernel (based on the Ubuntu kernel with the same name, but with some extras) and KDE is 3.5.2.

Enabling hardware acceleration on (newer) Nvidia based graphics cards is the easiest ever: after installing beta4 to the harddisk (I installed grub in the root partition so I had to adapt my menu.lst to reflect the newer kernel) just install nvidia-glx and reboot. That's it; no need to edit xorg.conf.

So far, no problems.......Smiling Looks good...!

However it is only listed on

However it is only listed on one of the public servers and that one is slower than a politician admitting he is at fault, I will wait for the others to populate and the grab it.

Slow........

Even the Mepis ftp-server was quite a bit slower than usual....
My guess is that a lot of guys started to download beta4 at the same time I did: Normally I would get an average DL-speed of about 500 KBytes/s; this time it started at 500 and at 100% it was barely 200...

Thanks for The News

Thanks for the "heads up" Ko Bros. I'll have to grab a copy and test it out. Since I was able to successfuly run VMware under the Beta 3, I'm looking forward to testing that out again and checking my other software.

Barring any (new) problems it looks like we are on schedule for an "official" June release Smiling

Oh, for anyone who cares, Ubuntu released their "Release Candidate". I have begun looking at it, but as a friend of mine has discovered, "If you like GNOME, you'll like Ubuntu. If you like KDE, use Mepis." Smiling

Enabling the hardware

Enabling the hardware acceleration is easy indeed, BUT after installing latest Nvidia drivers the only possible resolution is 1024 x 768. I read somewhere that somebody else did have the same problem. I guess some messing up with xorg.conf (or whatever, non point and click thing) is needed?

I know my monitor Hyundai l70s isn`t really supported by Linux, but the way it looks with these Nvidia drivers reminds me of the time I tried Ubuntu (my eyes hurt). Cool

New Gnome-like system-settings thing says that the refresh rate is 75Hz but it cannot be, it must be less than that. It doesn`t allow it to be changed, neither can resolution be changed there (there is only one option to choose...). So what`s the point with it?

OK, I don`t want to complain and I believe these things will be fixed when the final release comes. They probably already know these issues at . Otherwise this seems a lot like 3.4-3 which means this must become unbelievable good. And yes I know it`s a beta.

Presuming you are using the

Presuming you are using the Nvidia accelerated drivers and an xorg.conf created by the Mepsi OSCenter, to get a resolution higher than 1024X768 you need to look at this line in /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

Option "MetaModes" "1024X768" "1024X768"

Your choices are to comment out the line or change both of the resolutions to your preferred resolution. Control-alt-backspace to restart X and you should be in business.

Another thing you can try is to install two packages nvidia-settings and nvidia-xconfig. Then at a command prompt (as root) run nvida-xconfig. This utility will write a new xorg.config for you with better stuff in it than OScenter which I think currently has problems. Then you can adjust the settings to taste with nvidia-settings which is a GUI application from nvidia.

The problem I found with this second approach was that the verisons of nvidia-xconfig and nvidia-settings currently in the pool are incompatible with the version of nvidia-glx in the pool and installed by Mepis.

Your mileage may vary, good luck.

Thank you!

Editing xorg.conf was surprisingly easy (OK, I had perfect instructions). Everything works now. I enjoy learning things - it`s just that MEPIS is so good that it seems there is not many essential things to learn... I actually tried beta just because I was curious and I saw a good opportunity to learn something - which I did, thank you very much!
