Google's Picasa Released for Linux
I couldn't decide where this should be posted. It's news about a popular image editor. But, this kind of thing doesn't seem to fit just right in any of the forum categories.
I consider the effort Google made to be significant, since they are likely to be a thorn in Microsoft's side in the future, and it looks like they're going to try and make some of their software available to Linux users, too (even if it's only via Wine in this case).
Anyway, Google has now released Picasa for Linux. It's been in beta for a while now. This February 2006 article discussed it (they apparently incorporated a run time version of Codeweaver's Cross-Over Office implementation of Wine):

Here is an article mentioning it's release (no longer in beta):

I use Picasa very often under XP. It supports raw files from my camera, allows fast browsing through images, and does little things like straightening my crooked horizons quickly.
It's not as powerful as many editors, but it's very simply to use and is one more tool in a software arsenal for those that do a lot of work with images.
It lacks some features the XP version has.
I installed it on my SimplyMEPIS-6.0 b3 fully upgraded.
It ran VERY fast and scanned my entire system. While browsing through my images I noticed three that were only on the XP partition, so I immediately deleted all my directories and scanned only my home account, to avoid attempts by the app to write to my NTSF partition.
I also noticed that the Linux version will not play videos or sound files. But, all in all, it is an excellent app.

I installed it too and it
I installed it too and it seems to be a winner and hats off to Google for not forgetting us Linux users.

I installed it yesterday and
I installed it yesterday and it doesn't require Wine to be installed. But it works fine a little slower than in Windoze but it still works. And like you said it has most of the bells and whistles that a average user will need.
