File Copy freezes computer

The second hard drive was formatted as NTFS.
The main hard drive was formatted as ext2.
Normal user in "disk" group

On my MEPIS 6.0 install, my normal user account is in the "disk" group.
This can be seen using:
$ grep disk /etc/group
disk:x:6:user,backup,root,onthego
Ubuntu restricted pools

In his recent announcement http://www.mepis.org/node/12677, Warren states "Users are also reminded to disable the Ubuntu restricted pools, since they contain kernel updates that are not MEPIS compatible."
Upgrade reverts /etc/apt/preferences

I finally decided to get caught up on package updates, even though most of them have "grave" or "critical" bugs reported by apt-listbugs. But I took the precaution of imaging the partitions first.
fakeroot make-jpkg ERROR

joe@[tmp]$ fakeroot make-jpkg jdk-6-linux-i586.bin
/usr/bin/fakeroot: line 150: make-jpkg: command not found
joe@[tmp]$
This used to work with MEPIS 3.4-3 .
Any ideas how to make/create a "deb" package with MEPIS 6.0 ?

Posting this from the livecd Mepis-64 6.04 beta1.
The beta1 is available to Subscribers on the Mepis ftp-server.
Just like in Mepis-32 there is a flaw in Mepis-64 that keeps from setting the correct resolution from the CD. Warren stated this earlier to me in an email communication:

I recently upgraded from Mepis 3.43 to Mepis 6.0.
In Mepis 3.43 I could enter konsole and enter the following command to blank (not format) a DVD+RW:
growisofs -Z /dev/scdN=/dev/zero
