Missing Package in RC2

We have received reports that the utility for manually selecting your monitor type in order to set your monitor frequencies is not working. This is because we inadvertently left the hwdata package out of the SimplyMEPIS 6.0 RC 2 build. If you're having this problem, you can install the package hwdata with synaptic or apt-get.

A Painless Upgrade to KDE 3.5.3

If you are running any of the SimplyMEPIS 6.0 Betas, and want to install KDE 3.5.3, first read our disclaimer, then follow the instructions:

Disclaimer: This has been tested at MEPIS and has worked for us. However, we cannot guarantee that this will work for everyone, so do this upgrade at your own risk!

Guidelines for Upgrading SimplyMEPIS 6.0

If you are running a SimplyMEPIS 6.0 Beta release, you can upgrade your system by using Synaptic.

MEPIS pools are usually updated within 24 hours of a new release. By doing an upgrade, your system should be approximately 99.9% the same as a fresh install. Since we can't guarantee 100% accuracy with an upgrade, we would prefer that testers still perform fresh installs before providing feedback. If you do an upgrade and submit feedback, please specify that you did an upgrade.

Oracle 10g Free Edition Available for SimplyMEPIS 6.0

For your convenience, the oracle-xe-universal package is available in the MEPIS 6.0 pool. This is the free Oracle Database 10g Express Edition for MEPIS and Debian--it will probably also work for Ubuntu.

Reminder About Upgrading From Pools

Please remember that we are in a development cycle right now and content in the MEPIS and Ubuntu pools is changing often. This means that packages may be temporarily broken.
Update from the pools with extreme caution!

ALERT: Etch pool going through major changes!

February 2, 2006: Until further notice, all SimplyMEPIS users need to be VERY careful when installing packages from the Debian Etch pool. Please don't do an upgrade on your "work" machines.

The pool is entering an unstable period which will probably last for a month or maybe two.

A New DCC Kernel and Another MEPIS Poll

There's a new DCC kernel in the works and we want your opinion.  Warren builds the kernels for the DCC, which previously have been from Debian sources.  However, the DCC plans to use Ubuntu sources for the next kernel.  We think that the Ubuntu kernel may offer better hardware support.  This leaves the question of whether or not MEPIS should switch to the new Ubuntu-based DCC kernel, or stay with our own Debian-based kernel.
